1776. De fleste i familien var advokater, og han fulgte tradisjonen. Men et=

matematikk og fysikk vakt interesse hos han, og han startet studiene i disse

fysikk ved det kongelige college i Vercelli i Nord-Italia, og underviste i
matematikk og fysikk.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>Avogadro levde omtrent samtidig med John Dalton, som
publiserte sine teorier om atomene i 1808. Dalton hadde ikke noen eksakt me=
tode
til &aring; bestemme atommasser, og antok feilaktig at det ikke var mer enn=
 ett
atom av hvert slag i de fleste vanlige kjemiske forbindelsene. Han skrev de=
rfor
formelen for vann og ammoniakk som HO og NH. I 1811 publiserte Avogadro en
artikkel der han forklarte forskjellen mellom atomer og molekyler, og slo f=

at gassene hydrogen og oksygen bestod av to-atomige molekyler, H<sub>2</sub=

inneholder det samme antallet molekyler dersom gassene har samme trykk og
temperatur. Dette antallet, Avogadros&#8217; tall, ble ikke bestemt grovt
f&oslash;r i 1865, ni &aring;r etter hans d&oslash;d. Avogadros&#8217; tall=
 ble
seinere mer n&oslash;yaktig bestemt ved Millikans oljedr&aring;pefors&oslas=
h;k,
men i dag brukes r&oslash;ntgenanalyse til bestemmelsen.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>I 1820 kom han tilbake til Torino som leder av
fysikkavdelingen, men beholdt ikke stillingen lenge. Det var urolige tider i
Italia p&aring; denne tiden, og avdelingen ble inntil videre nedlagt. I 1834
kom Avogadro tilbake, og beholdt stillingen til han trakk seg tilbake i 185=
0.</p>
