Han studerte ved forskjellige institusjoner i Paris, og hadde til hensikt
&aring; arbeide som gruveingeni&oslash;r. Men s&aring; ble han &#8211;
overraskende for han selv &#8211; tilbudt et professorat i kjemi ved Ecoles=
 des
Mines i Paris. Han arbeidet ved flere universitet i Paris, inntil han ble
professor i uorganisk kjemi ved College de France i 1889. Her ble han til 1=
908.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>Typisk for hans forsking er det intime samspillet mell=
om
teori og praksis, noe som hadde mye &aring; si for industrien. Han startet =
med
&aring; studere kjemien til sement. I denne forbindelse fant han ut at de
termometrene som var tilgjengelige da, var altfor un&oslash;yaktige ved
h&oslash;ye temperaturer. Han oppfant da en ny type temperaturm&aring;lere,=
 som
kalles termoelementer. De best&aring;r av to forskjellige metalltr&aring;de=
r,
som er loddet sammen i endene. Her vil det g&aring; en str&oslash;m n&aring=

temperaturen p&aring; de to loddpunktene er ulik. Str&oslash;mmen &oslash;k=

saltene med vann. Resultatene av denne forskingen ble det vi i dag kjenner =
som
Le Chateliers prinsipp: Et system pr&oslash;ver p&aring; alle m&aring;ter
&aring; motvirke de endringer som blir gjort p&aring; det. Fritz Haber gjor=
de
bruk av prinsippet da han klarte &aring; lage ammoniakk ut av grunnstoffene
hydrogen og nitrogen.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>Le Chatelier var ogs&aring; interessert i forbrenninge=
r og
eksplosjoner. Det siste kom av at det stadig var eksplosjonsulykker i frans=
ke
gruver. Han arbeidet med blandinger av metan og luft, og fant bl.a.
eksplosjonstemperaturen og i hvilke forhold blandinger av metan og luft var
eksplosive. Siden gjorde han samme fors&oslash;kene med andre brennbare gas=
ser
som hydrogen og acetylen.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>Seinere arbeidet han innen omr&aring;det allotropi, de=
r han
studerte overgangene fra en form av et stoff til et annet. Dette f&oslash;r=
te
han over til hvordan glass utvidet seg og videre til legeringers egenskaper.
Derfra var ikke veien til metallurgien lang, der han ogs&aring; gjorde en s=
tor
innsats. Han publiserte totalt mer enn 500 artikler og b&oslash;ker.</p>
