1766. Han startet &aring; undervise allerede som tolv&aring;ring n&aring;r =
hans
gamle l&aelig;rer sluttet. Dette arbeidet kastet ikke mye av seg, s&aring; =
han
m&aring;tte tilbake til g&aring;rdsdriften alt to &aring;r etter. Men han h=
adde,
fornuftig nok, f&aring;tt smaken p&aring; matematikk, og dro tilbake til en
annen skole som l&aelig;rer i 1781. Han hadde dessverre ikke anledning til
&aring; studere ved verken Oxford eller Cambridge. Likevel ble han l&aelig;=
rer
i matematikk og naturfilosofi ved Manchester Academy i 1793. Der ble han i =
ti
&aring;r f&oslash;r han flyttet til colleget i York, hvor han underviste i
matematikk og kjemi.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>Daltons interesser begynte f&oslash;rst i meteorologisk
retning, og han gjorde daglige observasjoner av v&aelig;r og vind i 15
&aring;r. Resultatene hans ble publisert i 1793. Han gjorde ogs&aring; et
fors&oslash;k p&aring; &aring; forklare fargeblindhet, som han personlig led
av. Denne forklaringen var mindre vellykket, men hans metodiske m&aring;te
&aring; legge fram ting p&aring; imponerte likevel samtiden. Seinere utga h=

<p class=3DMsoNormal>I starten av 1800-&aring;rene arbeidet han videre med
gasser, kom fram til loven som er oppkalt etter han om totaltrykket i en
gassblanding og arbeidet videre med damptrykk ved ulike temperaturer. Han k=
om
fram til at damptrykket for enhver v&aelig;ske &oslash;kte med temperaturen,
uansett hvilken v&aelig;ske vi arbeider med. Han forutsa ogs&aring; loven o=
m proporsjonalitet
mellom volum og absolutt temperatur av en gass. Denne loven ble publisert n=
oen
m&aring;neder etterp&aring; av franskmannen Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>Daltons viktigste unders&oslash;kelser ble gjort innen
atomteorien. Han satte opp fire postulater om atomene, der to av dem fremde=
les
gjelder i dag. De to andre er modifiserte.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>Dalton var en fremragende forsker, som gjorde utrolig
n&oslash;yaktige m&aring;linger med datidens mindre gode laboratorieutstyr.=
