<p class=3DMsoNormal>William Thomson ble f&oslash;dt i Belfast i Nord-Irland
26.juni 1824. Faren var professor i matematikk, og flyttet til Glasgow i
Skottland i 1832. William begynte p&aring; universitetet i Glasgow som
10-&aring;ring, men dette var ikke helt uvanlig for de mest intelligente
elevene p&aring; den tida. Likevel var ikke William mer en 14 &aring;r gamm=

<p class=3DMsoNormal>I 1846 fikk han et professorat hjemme i Glasgow, og st=

straks med &aring; arbeide med hydrodynamikk sammen med George Gabriel Stok=
es.
Thomsons originalitet gjorde at han brukte teorien herfra p&aring; elektris=
itetsteori
og atomteori. Studier innen termodynamikk gjorde at Thomson foreslo bruk av=
 en
absolutt temperaturskala. Selve temperaturskalen inndelt i grader Kelvin ble
f&oslash;rst definert seinere. Skalaen fikk navnet Kelvinskalen fordi Thoms=
on
ble adlet i 1892 til Lord Kelvin.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>I 1852 f&oslash;rte arbeidet hans sammen med James Pre=
scott Joule
til at Joule-Thomsoneffekten ble oppdaget. Denne sier oss at temperaturen i=

gass g&aring;r ned n&aring;r trykket gassen plutselig synker. Dette er et
velkjent prinsipp som vi kjenner godt n&aring;r lufta slippes ut av et
sykkeldekk.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>I 1850-&aring;rene deltok Thomson i en gruppe som plan=

&aring; legge en undersj&oslash;isk kabel mellom Irland og NewFoundland
p&aring; den amerikanske &oslash;stkysten. I 1858 ble kabelen lagt, og det =

p&aring; grunn av arbeidet hans med kabelen at han seinere ble adlet.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>Thomson gjorde fremragende forsking p&aring; mange
omr&aring;der, men hadde problemer med &aring; innse at hans egne teorier k=
unne
v&aelig;re gale. Han opponerte sterkt mot teoriene til Maxwell om
elektromagnetisme, Darwins teorier om utvikling og Rutherfords teorier om
radioaktivitet, og dette satte han litt p&aring; sidelinja i den siste
halvparten av livet hans. Thomson d&oslash;de 17.desember 1907.</p>
