1831. Han begynte p&aring; Akademiet i Edinburgh i 1841, og 14 &aring;r gam=

magnetisme,
og klarte ogs&aring; &aring; formulere disse teoriene med relativt enkle
matematiske likninger. Han fikk et professorat i Aberdeen i Skottland. Der
forsket han p&aring; Saturns ringer, og beviste at disse kunne bare v&aelig=
;re
stabile dersom ringene bestod av mange mindre partikler. Dette er bekreftet=

dag.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>I 1860 fikk han arbeid ved King&#8217;s College i Lond=
on.
Her ble hans viktigste arbeider utf&oslash;rt. I 1862 fant han ut at et
elektromagnetisk felt utvidet seg med lysets hastighet, og foreslo derfor at
lys er av elektromagnetisk natur. Han arbeidet videre med kinetisk gassteor=
i,
og publiserte denne i 1866. Her kom han med en statistisk forklaring p&arin=

Cavendish-laboratoriet i Cambridge i 1871, der han ble professor i fysikk. I
