<p class=3DMsoNormal>Walther Hermann Nernst ble f&oslash;dt i Briesen i
Pr&oslash;yssen 25.juni 1864. Han studerte ved universitetene i Z&uuml;rich,
Berlin og Graz, og fagene var fysikk og matematikk. Han tok doktorgraden i =
1887
p&aring; omr&aring;det elektromotoriske krefter produsert av magnetisme i
oppvarmede metallplater. Han begynte sin forskingskarriere ved universitete=
t i
Leipzig, der andre storheter som Ostwald, van&#8217;t Hoff og Arrhenius
allerede arbeidet. I 1894 flyttet han til G&ouml;ttingen, der han ble profe=
ssor
i b&aring;de kjemi og fysikk. Han avsluttet sin forskergjerning ved
universitetet i Berlin til han gikk av i 1933.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>Nernst startet sin forsking innen elektrokjemi ved &ar=
ing;
g&aring; ut fra Arrhenius teori om spalting av salter i vandig l&oslash;sni=
ng.
Han arbeidet mye med elektrokjemiske celler, og publiserte en teori p&aring;
hvordan disse virket. I 1889 viste han hvordan m&aring;linger av str&oslash=
;m i
en elektrokjemisk celle kunne brukes til &aring; bergene endringen i fri en=
ergi
for reaksjonen som produserer str&oslash;mmen. Han utledete det vi i dag kj=
enner
som Nernsts likning, som viser hvordan cellepotensialet i en elektrokjemisk
celle avhenger av konsentrasjonene av elektrolyttene i cella. Han arbeidet
ogs&aring; med utfelling av faste stoffer ut fra l&oslash;sninger, og hvilke
betingelser som m&aring;tte v&aelig;re til stede for at dette skulle skje. =
Han
oppdaget termodynamikkens tredje lov i 1906. I 1920 fikk han Nobelprisen i
kjemi for arbeidet sitt innen termodynamikk.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>I 1918 kom han fram til en forklaring p&aring; hvordan
reaksjonen mellom hydrogen og klor egentlig skjer &#8211; reaksjonsmekanism=
en.
Han viste at var f&oslash;rst reaksjonen kommet i gang, ville den fortsette=
 til
et av stoffene var helt oppbrukt.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>I 1897 konstruerte han en lampe &#8211; Nernsts lampe
&#8211; der gl&oslash;detr&aring;den var laget av en blanding av oksider og
ikke karbon, slik som Edison hadde funnet opp. Fordelen med denne var at den
virket i oksygenrik atmosf&aelig;re. Men den ble snart utkonkurrert av den =
nye
lampene der gl&oslash;detr&aring;den var laget av wolfram eller tantal.</p>
