<p class=3DMsoNormal>Joseph John Thomson ble f&oslash;dt i Manchester 18.de=
sember
1856. I 1876 begynte han p&aring; college i Cambridge, der han ble resten av
livet. Hans omr&aring;de var fysikk, med hovedvekt p&aring; elektrisitet og
magnetisme. I 1897 publiserte han en artikkel om elektrisk utlading gjennom
gasser, og gjennom videre forsking p&aring; dette omr&aring;det gjorde han =
sin store
oppdagelse. Han satte h&oslash;y spenning mellom to elektroder som var plas=
sert
i et glassr&oslash;r der lufta var pumpet ut. Det gikk da en slags
str&aring;ler fra den negative katoden til den positive anoden, og disse
str&aring;lene ble kalt katodest&aring;ler. Det var flere forskere som stud=
erte
disse str&aring;lene, men Thomson var den f&oslash;rste som p&aring;viste a=
t de
hadde negativ ladning og en sv&aelig;rt liten masse &#8211; mye mindre enn
massen til et atom. Str&aring;lene kastet ogs&aring; skygge. Thomson kalte =
de
sm&aring; partiklene for elektroner. Navnet elektron var brukt tidligere so=
m en
mengde elektrisk ladning, men Thomson p&aring;viste at elektronet var en
partikkel som bygger opp atomet. Elektronet var dermed den f&oslash;rste
byggesteinen i atomet som ble p&aring;vist. Han beskrev atomet som en slags
bolle med elektronene som en slags rosiner som svever rundt. Atomkjernen var
p&aring; den tid ikke oppdaget. Det skulle bli hans student, Ernest Rutherf=
ord,
som p&aring;pekte at en slik fast kjerne m&aring;tte finnes.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>Thomson p&aring;viste ogs&aring; det som ble kalt
&#8221;anodest&aring;ler&#8221;. Dette var str&aring;ler som bestod av
partikler med positiv ladning (ioner), og ble grunnlaget for det vi i dag
kaller massespektrometri. Dette er en sv&aelig;rt viktig metode til &aring;
bestemme strukturen til organiske stoffer.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>I de f&oslash;rste 30 &aring;rene p&aring; 1900-tallet
publiserte han flere artikler om elektronet, positiv elektrisitet og lys. I
1918 p&aring;viste Thomson at grunnstoffer best&aring;r av flere typer
isotoper, med samme antall protoner, men forskjellig tyngde. Hva denne ulike
tyngden kom av, ble ikke oppdaget f&oslash;r seinere av James Chadwick. Tho=
mson
fikk Nobelprisen i fysikk i 1906.</p>
